Dive into the world of rays

The spotted eagle ray, also known as the leopard ray, inhabits coastal and estuaries waters of the Indo-Pacific zone. The largest individuals can reach over 3 meters. Subjected to overfishing, this species, characterized by its gregarious lifestyle and low fecundity, is threatened throughout its range. Partial protective measures exist today in some areas, such as the Maldives and Australia.

Aetomylaeus bovinus, also known as the duckbill eagle ray, is one of the largest rays in the Mediterranean. This species, found in the tropical and warm waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean, is still poorly studied but appears to be endangered in the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. It frequents coastal areas and mainly feeds on crustaceans and mollusks, such as mussels, oysters, and gastropods.

It is accommodated to life in freshwater. It is ovoviviparous: the eggs hatch in it body, and it gives birth to fully formed juveniles. It acclimate easily in aquariums, but beware of the stings from its tail that can inflict very painful wounds.
